IOS AppSheet - Constantly have to kill/restart when coming back to App after a period of inactivity

Is this normal? I don’t see any hits on here about it. I have the latest IOS version installed. I’ve replicated the “White Screen” behavior on both an iPhone and iPad.

My customer is also reporting this and they have the latest IOS.

There was a little discussion of this a few weeks ago:
Blank white screen requiring restart when opening app, any way to prevent this? There were a couple suggestions re troubleshooting in the thread, but to my knowledge, nothing really came of it. I continue to experience the issue, but have chalked it up to my old-ish model (iPhone 7) being pushed beyond its limits by a large number of newer apps.

Please contact AppSheet Support for help with this.

I have a client reporting the same issues across several users, a completely blank “white_screen”. It happens about half the time when either attempting to start the app for the first time of the day or switching app context back to AppSheet. There is no apparent response - even when left alone for 30 minutes or more. A restart of the app fixes the issue.

I have been running the same app from iPhone 7 and my iPad Pro Gen 1 with no issues. I am of course not using the app constantly like they are and do have other AppSheet apps I use or test.

I have not yet reported to AppSheet support since I can’t reproduce consistently - though I guess they should be made aware of the number of users impacted!!

Escalated.

This is a constant issue for me and my seven users. My apps are quite large and involved, and I think between that and the ipad limitations (latest non-pro, non-air ipads), it is not fixable…

Works a lot better on the iphone, for me. But we need the screen real estate, so that’s a non-starter.

From what I’ve been able to gather from the developers, this is a known problem, a fix is ready, but the fix depends on an update to iOS from Apple. Consequently, the fix must wait until Apple itself pushes out some sort of update.

It has to do with app being “Swapped Out / Sidelined” I think. I have been keeping my number of open ios apps killed except for Appsheet and the issue is not as bad. My app is getting a little bit on the heavy side, probably not helping either. Looking forward to the eventual fix from Apple/Appsheet!

Would it help if I did log a Support Ticket? It is rather annoying. Thanks

I doubt it would help, but it wouldn’t hurt, either.

Please pass along my thanks to the developer team. I think version 14.8 of the iOS app has resolved the swapped out startup issue.

I assume you are referring to the iOS AppSheet container app? Hmm, I am not seeing 14.8 available on the App Store yet. So I guess you got early access to it? I hope its widely available soon. I have a client in dire need of this fix.

It is there as far as I know .

Yesterday, I was able to update iOS version of AppSheet to v14.8 by going to the AppSheet app in the app store and manually triggering the update.

Indeed, the issue that’s the topic of this thread seems to be gone.

I think I may be experiencing a worse version of this than some (or all) of the group here…

I have essentially consigned myself to just dealing with it and restarting the apps every time.

I would LOVE to think that an update would solve this, but to me it is still a matter of app size and device.

I will know tomorrow if anything changed. My six field technicians will be a good test case. They all experience at least a couple crashes/white screens every day.

Yes I see it now … but it was weird.
I checked it again on the AppStore using the search. I found AppSheet but didn’t indicate an update was required. Only “Open” was available. I tapped “Open” and it launched AppSheet with the last app I used. I navigated back to the AppStore and this time tapped on the AppSheet row. In the AppStore Details view, it hen shoed the latest version and “Update” button.

Not sure why “Update” didn’t show initially but all seems good now.

Maybe this will help others.

Unfortunately for me, I seem to still experience the issue. I have verified the AppSheet update and have restarted my phone.

I am running iOS 15.4.1 on an iPhone 7. AppSheet version 14.8.

The steps to re-produce are quite simple.

  • 2 apps with Home screen shortcuts.
  • Launch first app.
  • Use Home button to return to Home screen leaving first app still running.
  • Launch second app from shortcut.
  • Double-tap Home button and select First app.
  • AppSheet loads and shows second app and never switches to first app.
  • Double-tap Home button again and again select First app.
  • White screen.

I don’t really think it matter how I launch the two apps. If I have two AppSheet apps running and I attempt to double-tap the Home button and use the app carousel to switch between the apps - I get the white screen.

Is there an easy way to determine “App Size”?
