Hello friends,
I have watched several videos about enabling the external chat option from the admin panel, and I have followed all the steps. However, I still cannot add an external person to the chat spaces. Does anyone have a solution?
Hello friends,

Hey! I am a Google Chat product expert and would love to learn more so I can assist you.
Is the ability to add external users to your space enabled? Before you can add external users you have to ensure that option was enabled when the space was first created since can not be changed after space creation.
If that is not the issue then what error message are you getting when trying to add external users? Are they other Workspace domain users or are they regular Gmail.com users?
The option to add external users is already enabled in the admin panel.
Some of the users are from different domains, while others are regular Gmail users.
However, when I try to create spaces, I don’t see any option (such as a checkbox) to add external users—this is the case for both private spaces and spaces within my domain.
What workspace edition do you have? Not all of them allow external users to be added to spaces that your domain creates and so the external users setting is geared more for one on one conversation and if your end users can be added to other domain spaces.
Unfortunately the comment got hidden from view so I unable to figure out what you were saying SKP503. Feel free to try again but without any personal sensitive information including email addresses or even non Google articles links and if posting a screenshot, ensure to blur out all PII and sensitive information.
Displaying a switch that can’t be flipped creates an awful UX.
@Penelope I also have this issue.
I can confirm that I have enabled the option to allow for External Chats in the Admin panel and I have a Google Workspace Business Standard plan.
This is the UI I get when I go to create a space and afterwards the checkbox cannot be clicked when I go to space settings
Hi Bradley, what happens if you change the access setting section? I know in the past if the space was considered discoverable (which means that people in your own organization can find fhd space without being explicitly invited to it) that meant the external user setting could not be switched on. Here is a link that talks more about the discoverable spaces: https://support.google.com/chat/answer/11971020.
Hi @Penelope,
I’ve now solved this. I changed from a Managed Domain Allowlist to allowing any domain and the option now seems to appear.
Hey Bradley, thank you so much for letting me know! I really appreciate it and I will definitely keep this in mind. It’s a question I do run into from time to time.
