Help with Transferring a .app Domain to Google Cloud Domains

Hi,

I’m seeking assistance with transferring my .app domain from GoDaddy to Google Cloud Domains for management and renewal. Here’s a summary of my situation:

Domain Status and Steps Taken So Far:

  1. The domain is registered with GoDaddy.
  2. I’ve unlocked the domain and confirmed this by testing a transfer to Cloudflare, where it prompted me for the authentication (EPP) code.
  3. Whois privacy protection is currently enabled at GoDaddy. I understand it might need to be disabled, but I am concerned about the potential risk of spam exposure during the transfer process.
  4. I have the authorization (EPP) code ready for the transfer.

Issue with Google Cloud Domains:

  1. I logged into the Google Cloud Console and navigated to the Cloud Domains section.
  2. There doesn’t seem to be a direct option to transfer my .app domain.
  3. When I search for my domain in the “Register a Domain” section, it shows the status as “Unavailable.”

Questions:

  1. Is it currently possible to transfer .app domains to Google Cloud Domains? If so, could someone guide me through the correct steps?
  2. Do I need to disable Whois privacy protection at GoDaddy for the transfer to proceed? Will this expose my personal contact details publicly during the transfer?
  3. If transfers for .app domains are not yet supported by Google Cloud Domains, is there an alternative way to manage .app domains with Google services?

I would appreciate any guidance or advice from the community. My domain is approaching its expiry date (around one month left), and I would prefer to manage renewals via Google services.

Squarespace acquired all domain registrations and related customer accounts from Google Domains. Transferring domain from third-party domain registrar to Cloud domain is already shut down since January 22, 2024. You can transfer domain registry to Squarespace so you can easily manage the .app domain with Google services. Here is the guide on how to transfer a GoDaddy Domain to Squarespace.

When transferring a domain, GoDaddy needs to send emails to the registrant’s email address for approval. If WHOIS privacy is active, your email is hidden, which can block these transfer emails. Heres what you can do.

  1. Temporarily disable WHOIS privacy before starting the transfer. This will make sure GoDaddy can send the necessary confirmation emails to your real email address.
  2. Once the transfer is done, you can re-enable WHOIS privacy to hide your personal details again.

While the privacy is disabled, your contact details may briefly appear in the WHOIS database, but this is only temporary. After the transfer, they will either be hidden again if you re-enable privacy or remain visible if you don’t.
