Hello Google Workspace Developers Team,
I’m an independent developer working on a personal productivity app that provides optional Google Drive integration.
Users can connect their own Google accounts to synchronize and back up their app data. The app uses the drive.file OAuth scope and stores data directly in each user’s personal Google Drive account.
The functionality includes:
-
Optional synchronization between devices
-
User-initiated cloud backup and restoration
-
Retention of previous backup versions
After reviewing the Google Drive API Terms of Service, I noticed that backing up user or application content to Google Drive may require Google’s express prior written consent.
I would appreciate clarification on the following:
-
Does this requirement apply when users voluntarily connect their own Google Drive accounts to synchronize personal app data?
-
Are synchronization and explicit backup/restore operations treated differently under this policy?
-
If prior written consent is required, what is the official application process?
-
Is there an official contact email, private support channel, or authorized team responsible for reviewing and granting such consent?
-
Does this restriction also apply during limited, invitation-only app testing?
I have searched the official documentation and developer community discussions but have not found a clear application process or contact point for obtaining this consent.
I would like to ensure compliance before making these features publicly available.
Any official guidance or referral to the appropriate Google team would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.
