Looker Studio GA4 Custom Filter data issue

Hello Everyone,

I am experiencing an issue with my GA4 integration in Looker Studio. I’ve set up custom dimensions that categorize URLs based on specific keywords in the URL path. For example:

  • URLs containing /car-toys are categorized as Car
  • URLs containing /soft-toys are categorized as Soft
  • URLs containing /kids-toys are categorized as Kids
  • URLs containing /lego-toys are categorized as Lego

I’m using these categories to filter data throughout the report in Looker Studio, which includes:

  • Weekly session data (displayed in scorecards)
  • URL-specific data
  • Data grouped by category
  • Day-wise graphs

Everything works as expected until I apply category filters. For instance, when I exclude data for a specific category (e.g., Soft toys), the total session count increases instead of decreasing.

For example, the unfiltered session count is 10,000, but excluding a category causes the session count to rise to 12,000, which shouldn’t happen—it should reduce.

I’ve tested this across three different reports and encountered the same issue. Additionally, I’ve noticed discrepancies between the data in GA4 and Looker Studio when filters are applied.

Has anyone experienced a similar issue? Is this a known bug, or could I be missing something? Any insights would be appreciated!

Thanks in advance!
