I don't know who thought this was better, but its not.

Not digging this. When you switch it to manual it automatically adds all columns to start.
I’d argue there are very few views in which you would use all columns, so it just adds another step to select them all and remove them, then add the ones you actually want.

Automatic just adds all the columns in their default order it seems. So I, and I assume most users, will use that exactly never.

Then there is the unintuitive interface of selecting the checkbox being for moving them or manually selecting a before and after, but it does not control which fields display.

The old setup was perfectly intuitive. If you see it, it will display. Then simply drag them into the order you want.

Speaking of which, the header and quick edit columns are the old UI, so you have still have to use the old strategy, while fighting with the new one.

Thats UX 101. Don’t give users two different ways in the same view to do the same action in the same view. Its confusing.

So its just kind of adding extra unnecessary steps. Why “fix” what isn’t broken?

I see the problem they were trying to fix, namely having to scroll through the list of columns to add them.

I’ve always just used control+F.

But a simple search bar at the top of the list would have sufficed, no need to overhaul the whole interface.
