I am new to AppSheet and would like some introductory information

Hello, I am new to AppSheet and interested in using AppSheet for future projects. I am evaluating my capabilities of working with AppSheet (since most of my experience is with Microsoft Access) and checking to see if it would be a viable option for me. I copied and experimented with a sample AppSheet app and would like to learn how-to for a few functions. While the Help section for AppSheet has a great deal of content, I am hoping to streamline my evaluation by communicating one-on-one with someone to assist with a few fundamentals.
Best Regards,
Bill

Hi, and welcome to the community Bill_Hyde!

I’ve been here about a month now, and my experience is so far:

  • Usually there will be answers here if you post specific questions. If you want someone to do the work for you, you’d better hire someone. If not, then tutorials on youtube helps a lot. This forum is also a great source.

  • Appsheet is easy to begin with, and it gets harder the more functionality you want out of it. If you have many tables, slices, views, behaviours and connections between them, like me, it gets hard after a while to keep the oversight. Name everything properly.

  • If you need to make a complex app and care about UX and UI, be prepared to redo it a couple of times You will figure out better ways to do things while you play with it.

  • Appsheet also does a lot of work behind the scenes, which most of the time is great, but sometimes it generates functionality you don’t really want. And then you have to figure out a way to not make virtual columns for example, so you keep loading time reasonable.

  • If your app gets big and complex the loading time will be very long, unless you rewrite a lot of functions for better performance. This is pretty well documented here Or you have to break the app up into multiple smaller ones.

  • There is a plethora of settings you have to get familiar with. It took me a lot of back and forth in all the menus to figure out what was possible. Also beware not to turn on PRO or BUSINESS options if you only want a PREMIUM membership.

  • If you understand spreadsheet functions, it will go faster to make a good app.

Appsheet is easier than coding. Fighting through complex logic, and developing an understanding of the platform is still required if you need advanced functionality.

Best of luck.

Excellent post, @Ratatosk! Not bad for only a month of experience.

Hi @Bill_Hyde,

Here’s a great meta post with tons of training info put together by @Jake_Naude

AppSheet is a “no code” platform which makes app building a relatively quick and easy thing… once you have your head around a few basics. If you’re like me you’ll probably dive right in and start building without reading this stuff and end up wasting a great deal of time going in circles. Trust me, if you can manage it, take a couple of days to go through this stuff first. The time you loose up-front will easily be made up later… Not exhaustive and in no particular order, here a…
