My organization has a Google Group we use strictly as an email Distribution List (customerops@example.com)
A few months ago, our customers’ inbound emails to that group started displaying as if they were from our customerops@example.com (vs. customeremailaddress@example.com)
I have tried troubleshooting this myself, I have tried Gemini, and I have tried Google Workspace Support – no luck.
I welcome any ideas that could help me resolve the issue. This is creating issues with auto-labeling inbound email.
The reason Google sometimes defaults to this “rewriting” behaviour is to prevent the email from being rejected by your own server. If a customer (e.g., from @gmail.com) sends an email to your group, and your group forwards it to you, your mail server might see an email claiming to be from @gmail.com but coming from a Google Groups IP.
This is how you can change the behaviour -
-
Sign in to Google Groups (groups.google.com).
-
Click on My groups and select customerops@example.com.
-
On the left-hand sidebar, navigate to Group settings > Email options.
-
Look for a setting labelled “Sender header” (it might also appear under “Post replies to” or a similar label).
-
Ensure it is set to “Author’s address” rather than “Group address.”
-
Crucially: Check the “Member privacy” section. If “Identification required” is set to “Display profile name only,” it can sometimes interfere with how the address is rendered in certain mail clients.
