Google Cloud Translation - Does Documents translation consumes characters?

My simply question is if Document Translation charges per page and per characters at same time.
I translated two PDF’s pages and I was charged per page, but after I checked out the Quotas page, the “v2 and v3 general model characters per day” was showing how much characters I translated.

This translations was for test only. I will have to translate several documents for clients, so I need to now beforehand how much it will costs. If it’s indeed charged per page and characters at the same time, I need to know how to get the amount of characters the PDF files has.

Hi @isaporto,

Welcome to Google Cloud Community!

Document Translation does not charge per page and per character at the same time. It charges either per page or per character, depending on the document type and the selected translation model.

For PDF documents, Document Translation charges per page. You are charged per page translated, regardless of the character count within that page. This is the primary billing mechanism. The number of pages in a PDF document can be determined using a PDF viewer.

The “v2 and v3 general model characters per day” quota refers to the total number of characters that can be translated using the v2 and v3 general translation models within a 24-hour period. This quota is not related to the per-page or per-character pricing. The character count is for your own information and usage monitoring across all your translations. This limit is in place to prevent abuse and ensure fair usage for all users.

To determine the cost of translating a document, you need to know the document type and the number of pages in the document. You can then use the Document Translation pricing information to calculate the estimated cost by multiplying the number of pages by the cost per page.

I hope the above information is helpful.

Hello, @ibaui !
Thank you for your response!

It’s so confusing, because I ended up contacting the Google Cloud Support Chat and they said they indeed charges per page and per character at the same time.
I am unable to test for myself, since I would need to spent 500,000 characters. I did get charge per page, but there’s nowhere to check how much characters I spent (from the $10 credit) but the “v2 and v3 general model characters per day”.
