Google Cloud storage costs through the roof

Hello! We are a small company that have set up backup with Google Cloud storage (and uploaded by Chronosync backup software). We have about 2 TB of data and looking a the pricing it should cost about $ 5 a month with Archive storage class. However we are now at about $ 5-10 a day! (Some days have cost us $ 30.) Unless we can get control over the costs right away, we will just have to go elsewhere for backup of our data. Only a small percentage of the files are replaced/deleted/updated so I can’t understand why we are being charged so much? Any help with this issue would be most appreciated.

That’s frustrating. How many files are being updated in Archive? Note that in archive you pay for both early deletion fees as well as higher operation fees for files that are deleted. Archive is really meant for files you usually don’t touch: backups.

Yeah, we have about 400 000 files and daily there are maybe 10-30 files being updated or added. We don’t delete that often.

Hi Oler,

I wanted to ask if you are using the Google Cloud Backup and DR service or you are using cloud storage archive tier alone to store your backup?

Not using a backup service, just using backup software to back up to a google cloud bucket.

As you can see the Class A and B operations are what is costing us so much every day. These costs are just from 1.-9. August

Something does not add up here. Would you mind validating using metrics in Monitoring (e.g. requests) that you really are touching only 10-30 files a day?

Yes, on average I would say that we perhaps update/add 10-30 files per day, but I have involved the developer of the backup software also in case the software is the culprit. I am not sure how to read these graphs but I have grabbed a few to post here.
