FAQs: Setting Up a Google Workspace Account with a New Domain

On December 7th, the Google Workspace Team hosted the first of a series of “Meet the Expert” webinars dedicated to Google Workspace Admins. This first session focused on how to set up a Google Workspace account in the Admin Console with a new domain.

In case you missed it, no worries! We’ve documented all the questions and answers that were covered during the session for easy reference. If you have any questions that are not addressed in this blog, please comment directly below and our team (or someone from the Community) can help you out.

1. How do I purchase another domain under the same account?

You cannot purchase another domain after your Google Workspace sign up is complete. If you want to purchase another domain, you can buy them through one of the available registrars, like GoDaddy, Enom, DomainDiscount24, or Google Domains. And you can always add it to your Workspace account as a secondary domain.

2. Why am I being billed twice? I was told that I was going to get a 14-day free trial, but I was charged that first day.

During the sign up flow when purchasing a domain, there are two different subscriptions. One for the domain and one for Google Workspace. The Google Workspace one offers the 14-day free trial, but you still have to pay for your domain registration. This is why after the 14 days of your free trial, you are billed again.

3. None of my payment methods were accepted while starting the new Workspace account. What should I do?

Depending on the country you’re based in, there are different payment methods available to you to choose from. Certain methods, such as prepaid cards or virtual cards are not accepted. You can check out our documentation for a complete list of accepted payment methods. If, indeed, all the valid payment methods don’t work for you, please contact Google Workspace support for help.

4. How do I cancel the domain subscription?

You can go to the billing and subscription page, and click on your domain registration subscription. You will then have an option for canceling it. Remember that this stops the automatic renewal of your domain, in which case, you might want to transfer the domain to another host.

5. How do I verify my domain that I purchased through Google Workspace?

When you purchase a domain during the Google Workspace sign up flow (like what was shown during the demo) the domain is automatically verified. You don’t have to perform any actions. The same applies for MX DNS records for your email service as well.

The short answer: you don’t have to do anything if your domain was purchased from Google Workspace.

6. Why is my subscription suspended, and what options do I have?

There may be multiple reasons why your account is suspended. The most common reason is related to your payments. For example, an automatic payment has failed or your primary form of payment is not valid.

Another form of suspension happens when the account is not compliant with the Google Workspace Terms of Service.

But the administrator of the account and the secondary email will receive email notifications before the suspension happens and when it happens. Those emails contain details about the reason for the suspension and what to do to reinstate the account. Please check your email for those details and if you still have questions, please contact Google Workspace support for help.

7. How do I get my email to work if I transferred my domain from a previous account?

This is exactly what will be covered in the next Meet the Expert session on December 14. Save your spot!

8. How do I separate my Google Workspace account from WIX when I purchased the Google Workspace account through WIX?

Usually transfers are regulated by the entity that provisions the account, so you should check the WIX support information, where you can find the steps to transfer your account from WIX to Workspace.

Thank you to our Google Workspace experts, Sergio Nuccio and Tim Jin, for hosting this first session!
