Data backup and restore in Appsheet

I use appsheet with appsheet database as the source of data.

When I make a copy of the app (with Save app to DATABASE)…sometimes it copies the data perfectly which is amazing cause I dont have to write a backup and restore script in Appscript.

but sometimes it copies only the schema??? It is weird. what coulkd be the possible causes?

Any way to automate this copy thing??

When you copy your app, you should be given the option of copying the data, too, not just the schema:

The options I identified should copy the data automatically. Do they not? If not, it’s a bug and you should report it to Support. If this is not what you want automated, you’ll need to help me better understand what you want.

If you’re just looking for a general backup and restore feature for your app’s data, that’s not something AppSheet itself can do. You’d have to find an external solution.

I am actually looking for a general backup and restore option (like something that does this copy everyday at 2 AM) instead of me manually doing it.

AppSheet itself doesn’t provide that feature, so you’ll have to look elsewhere.

Hi Steve,

You gave a “copy options” dialogue box screenshot. I arrived at it another way, but see the same options. I have “Make a copy of the data for the new app” enabled, yet when I navigate to Databases (here - Login - AppSheet ) - it has not duplicated the AppSheet DB database.

My app sources data from BigQuery and from an AppSheet DB database.

I note your screenshot says to save to “google”. Mine does too. I saw others’ screenshots explicitly mention the appsheet db (don’t recall the specific wording) but I don’t see that option.

Given the AppSheet DB database is not duplicated, I figured that config option was meant for something else - some kind of internal data within the app’s own code/setup.

I note that if I click the kebab icon next to the AppSheet DB database (at the link above), there is no option there to “copy” or duplicate the database (ie. unlike under the kebab icon for the app iteself).

Can anyone tell me what this “Make a copy of the data for the new app” option is actually doing, given it is not duplicating the AppSheet DB database that is being used as a source for my app?

Both AppSheet Database and BigQuery were added as data hosts much later in AppSheet’s lifetime. It’s possible that the data copy option was overlooked or deliberately omitted for them. It is present and does work for Google Sheets-based data sources.
