Cost reduction

Hello, we use the App Engine service, and we noticed that it is our largest cost/billing volume, we are using the first generation execution environment (Java 8), if we migrate to Java 11 (second generation environment), there is the possibility cost reduction? Why is it not a legacy environment?

Hi @mcardosocnm ,

Welcome to Google Cloud Community!

Migrating from Java 8 (1st gen) to Java 11 (2nd gen) on App Engine can lower your costs significantly:

  • Up to 6% lower instance costs due to improved efficiency and faster loading.
  • Optimized resource usage via scaling controls and utilization targets.
  • Reduced downtime and cold starts for efficient resource utilization.

Beyond cost benefits:

  • Access to newer Java features for easier development and efficient code.
  • Improved security and stability with ongoing updates and bug fixes.
  • Long-term support for compatibility with future App Engine features.

Some effort involved:

  • Migrating codebase to the 2nd gen environment may require adjustments.
  • Potential compatibility issues with some 1st gen libraries or frameworks.

Overall, migration outweighs the drawbacks and offers substantial cost reduction and future-proofing.

!Interesting Cristian, thanks for answer!

Another question:
Within the APP Engine service, the following SKUs have relatively high billing values:
Flex Instance Core Hours - (SKU ID 5FCA-4F8C-5B82)
Flex Instance RAM - (SKU ID EB92-E009-1C7F)

We are studying the possibility of using container/cluster/kubernetes.

By making this type of change, can the cost of these items be reduced??
