šŸš€ Coming July 22nd: Key info for the community forum migration

Hi everyone,

In my first post I discussed why we are changing platforms. In this post I’ll provide info on what to expect regarding the community migration.

Key dates

First, a quick rundown of the timeline:

  • Wednesday, July 16th: This community will become read-only so we can migrate all content and user profiles to our new home. You will still be able to read everything on the site, but posting will be temporarily disabled. (Yes, I agree this is not ideal, but its not something we can avoid.)
  • Tuesday, July 22nd: The new community goes live! We’ll send you an email with a direct link to log in.
Details

Here are key details/changes for the coming community migration:

  1. Site name: The ā€œGoogle Cloud Communityā€ will be called the ā€œGoogle Developer Program forumsā€ with dedicated communities for Cloud, Workspace Developer, AppSheet, and Looker.
  2. URL: We’re moving to the official google.dev domain at https://discuss.google.dev. (google.dev is a more ā€œofficialā€ domain. We’re all grown up now!) All old links will redirect automatically.
  3. Sign in with your Google Developer Program profile: We’re moving away from siloed forum accounts to a unified login system powered by the Google Developer Program. Starting July 22nd, you will log in to the community forums at discuss.google.dev using your Google Account. This action will also seamlessly connect your forum profile to your no cost Google Developer Program profile (or help to quickly create one.) With this unified identity, we expect to reduce spam and bot accounts leading to a cleaner, higher trust forum.
  4. We are migrating your public post and reply history, your username, and your bio. User accounts associated with that content will also be migrated. We are implementing 301 redirects for all migrated content. Links to old forum posts should automatically redirect you to their new location.
  5. The Google Cloud Security (SecOps) Community is transitioning to a seperate, dedicated platform for security professionals. Read Matt’s post for more info.
FAQ

Q: What is the Google Developer Program?

The Google Developer Program is for all individuals building with Google technology. It provides no cost access to tools & resources designed to help you build, learn and grow. Using Google Developer Program membership to access the forum creates a higher trust community by providing stronger spam & bot prevention and synchronized achievements & recognition.

Q. Do I need a Google Developer Program profile to use the forums?

Yes. A Google Developer Program profile is required to participate in the forums. This is a key part of creating a more secure, trusted, and integrated community experience.

Q. What if I don’t have a Google Developer Program profile?

Don’t worry! If you don’t have a Google Developer Program profile, you will be guided through a seamless, one-time sign-up process when you first log into the new forums at discuss.google.dev to create your free profile.

Q: What are the primary community spaces in the new site?

The community site on Discourse is organized into a distinct community forum categories:

  • Cloud: A community for those who develop, connect, deploy, and operate on Google Cloud.
  • Looker: A community for and Looker and Looker Studio users to connect with each other, seek and offer help on using their respective products, and stay informed about upcoming releases and events.
  • AppSheet: A community for citizen developers to stay up to date with release notes, get peer help with app building, and provide feedback to the AppSheet product team.
  • Workspace Developers: Discussions, knowledge sharing, and updates for developers working with Google Workspace APIs, Google Apps Script, add-ons, or integrations.
  • Workspace Upcoming Releases: (formerly known as Customer Connect) is a private forum for admins and related roles to learn more about planned and upcoming releases. Available to current customers & partners only.

Q: Which specific categories and features will be retired?

  • Workspace Q&A: This forum for general Workspace Q&A will be retired. For Google Workspace IT Admin questions, please visit the official Google Workspace Admin Community.
  • Workspace Feature Ideas: This section will be retired. Google Admins can use the ā€œSend Feedbackā€ in the Google Admin menu to send feedback to the product team or work with your sales teams to submit Feature Requests.
  • Google Cloud Customer Connect: This forum is being retired. Google Cloud roadmap information and announcements can be accessed by contacting your account team.
  • Learning and Certification Hub: Google Cloud learning resources, tutorials, guides and announcements will now be posted in the central News and Announcements category.

Q: How do I claim my profile and post history?

Starting July 22nd, you will receive an email with a link to the new site. Simply log in with the same Google Account you used on the old forums. This will automatically connect your past contributions to your new, unified profile.

Q: What happens if I don’t log in to the new community?

Any profile that is not claimed by logging into the community site between 7-22-2025 and 11-19-2025 will be anonymized to protect user privacy. Your posts will remain, but they will no longer be attached to your username.

Q: I’m having trouble logging in or with my profile after launch. What should I do?

For specific help with logging in or issues with your migrated profile, please email our dedicated support team at gdp-forums-support@google.com.

I am personally excited about this next chapter. This move is about providing you with a better tool, recognizing your contributions more effectively, and building a safer, more connected community for the long term.

Thanks, Andrew!

Super excited about the transition to discuss.google.dev — a much-needed step toward a more unified, trusted, and developer-first experience. Love the move to a single Google Developer Program identity — cleaner profiles, less spam, and more credibility. :bullseye:

The read-only phase makes sense for smooth migration. July 22 can’t come soon enough! :rocket:

Looking forward to reconnecting on the new platform with a sharper interface, organized spaces, and clearer contribution recognition. Let’s build an even stronger community together. :flexed_biceps: :globe_with_meridians:

Yeah, I’m really looking forward to seeing the new forum. Before that, I have a few questions. Will we be keeping the same rank and badge system as before (Understanding Community Ranks and Badges)? Also, will there be any new features, badges or benefits for GCP-certified users, specially for those who are 14x GCP certified?

Hi mokit! We will not be using the same badging system in the new platform, there will be some basic badges at first and then we are planning to thoughtfully introduce more. What kind of badges or features would be most valuable to you?

At the moment, I haven’t fully recalled all the features or badges that would be most valuable, but here are a few I might recommend:

  • Consistency Badges: For maintaining activity over consecutive days (e.g., 30, 60, 90 days).
  • GCP Service Expertise Badges: For demonstrating deep knowledge in specific services like VM, VPC, GKE, etc.
  • Quiz or Contest Participation Badges: For engaging in knowledge checks or competitive events.
  • Helpful Content Creator Badges: For writing insightful or helpful blog posts or tutorials.
  • GCP Certification Badges: For passing official GCP certification exams.
  • Developer Expert Badges: For recognized technical expertise in specific domains.
  • Mentorship Badges: For serving as a mentor or mentee within the community.
  • GCP Ambassador Badges: For promoting and advocating GCP through community involvement.

Really a shame to lose the Workspace community - not all of us are developers or admins but still have responsibility for deploying Workspace tools and functionality.

It would be better to publish a shorter name than googlecloudcommunity. Good luck.

I wish the badge could be there too, as a commemorative award for those who actively contribute to this forum.

Great opportunity…! :sparkles:

Do you confirm that enabling the additional service ā€œGoogle Developersā€ from the Admin console is a prerequisite for logging into the Google Developer Program using our Google Workspace account?

Yes, you will need the ā€˜Google Developers’ bit enabled if you’re signing in with a Google Workspace account. Most have it enabled but if you do not instructions on how to do that can be found here: https://support.google.com/a/answer/10621196

And here is a direct link for that bit: https://admin.google.com/ac/settings/serviceonoff?aid=43929633726 (NOTE: only an admin can do this)
