Best practices for teaching Looker Studio in academic environments

Hello Looker Studio Community :waving_hand:,

I’m a university professor working with data analytics and software engineering students, and I’m starting to introduce Looker Studio in academic projects.

I’d love to hear from the community:

  • What are best practices for teaching Looker Studio to beginners?
  • Are there recommended datasets or use cases for education?
  • Any tips for helping students understand dashboards, filters, and data modeling concepts?

Thanks in advance! Looking forward to learning from your experiences.

Hi Yaskelly! That’s a great initiative. Since your students are into engineering and analysis, I think they’ll pick up the logic part pretty fast, but visualization has its own tricks.

To get started, I’d suggest not skipping steps. Sometimes we want to jump straight into BigQuery, but connecting a simple Google Sheet (with data they already understand, like personal finances or grades) usually helps things “click” faster regarding how dimensions and metrics interact.

About datasets, the “Google Demo Account” is a lifesaver. It has real e-commerce data from the Google Merchandise Store, perfect for them to see a real-world market scenario.

Finally, to explain modeling and filters, I really like using a kitchen analogy: modeling is the mise en place (the prep work, peeling, cleaning ingredients) and the dashboard is plating the dish for the customer. If they understand that 80% of the work is prepping the base so the filters work on the front end, that’s half the battle won.

Good luck with the class!

Hi Henrique, thank you so much for such a thoughtful and practical response! :raising_hands:

I really like your suggestion of starting with Google Sheets before jumping into BigQuery — using familiar data (like grades or finances) makes a lot of sense for helping students grasp dimensions and metrics more intuitively.

The kitchen analogy for data modeling is also brilliant. I’ll definitely use that to explain the importance of preparation versus presentation — it’s a great way to make the concept stick.

Thanks as well for pointing out the Google Demo Account and public datasets. This is exactly the kind of real-world context I was hoping to bring into the classroom.

Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience!
