Arial Font for Gmail

Dear Google Team,

Based on feedback gathered from our customers, I would like to request that “Arial” be included as one of the default text styles in Gmail. Many of our clients use Arial as their official corporate font, and having it available as a default option would greatly benefit their workflow.

Thank you for your consideration.

In Gmail, “Sans Serif” is Arial. I know it sounds a bit odd, but “Sans Serif” is the technical category Arial belongs to. In the Gmail interface:

  • Sans Serif = Arial

  • Serif = Times New Roman

  • Fixed Width = Courier New

So, if your clients select Sans Serif from that dropdown in your screenshot, they are actually using Arial. When the recipient receives the email, their computer will read that “Sans Serif” tag and display it as Arial (which is the standard default for almost every web browser and email client in the world).

Are you seeing something different?

It’s helpful to know tha fonts like Arial are proprietary and copyrighted by Monotype Imaging. The fonts at fonts.google.com are all open source. See Frequently Asked Questions  |  Google Fonts  |  Google for Developers.
