Appsheet Data residency & SSO

Hello, I would like to change Appsheet Data Residency to “EU”, (being actually on “Global”). to this I have 2 questions.

The Documentation states:

The following data sources are not supported in the Asia Pacific or EU region: Box, Dropbox, Microsoft Excel, Salesforce…..Only Google providers are supported to authenticate AppSheet sign-ins in the Asia Pacific (Preview) or EU region….

I’m the “google evangelist”, I don’t use “Excel” Databases or other… But my company uses the classic Office365/active directory Combo, so my users login trough their “Microsoft SSO”.

Why would this not work in EU ? and is their any plan to make it work ? as I cannot change yet regarding this issue…

Beside that, is there any real interrest to locate Appsheet in EU ? It would be a better “upfront” for our customers concerning GDPR and all that, but regarding the “Data storage location” by itself, I don’t use Appsheet databases… I use Google sheets, for which my workspace is already set to EU…

From my understanding in this use case no data is stored outside of EU. it only goes trough appsheet.com, for the “front-end” data manipulation, but not “cold storage”… Am I right ?

Thanks for your answers !

Hello ! any Appsheet/google Staff to have a look on this issue ?

Thanks by advance !

This being a User Community, Google staff do not regularly respond to post here. If you would like to get an answer directly from them, then I suggest to reach out to AppSheet Support.

I’ll try to answer your questions here.

You should be able to use Microsoft accounts for authentication but the assumption then is that you are using Microsoft’s cloud storage services for any files. You just would not be able to use Excel as a datasource due to GDPR.

Based on the experience I have had with apps used in the UK, your understanding is correct. AppSheet is well aware of the regional requirements and actively seek to store your datasources on services in your region - UK in your case - in order to satisfy those privacy requirements.

For some additional details you can refer to this article:

I hope this helps!!!

Hey,

Hope you’re keeping well.

In AppSheet, the data residency setting affects where the AppSheet service itself runs and stores metadata, not just your app’s underlying data in Google Sheets. When set to EU, authentication options are limited to Google providers because Microsoft SSO integration currently relies on infrastructure that is only available in the Global region. That’s why Office 365/Azure AD sign‑in won’t work if you switch to EU.

If your Google Sheets are already stored in EU Workspace, your raw data remains in EU, but with “Global” residency the AppSheet service metadata and processing may occur outside EU. Moving to EU residency can help with GDPR positioning because both metadata and processing are kept within EU, but you’d need to ensure all required integrations and authentication methods are supported before switching. For now, if Microsoft SSO is critical, you’ll need to stay on Global until EU support is expanded.

Thanks and regards,
Taz
