Why can’t we have direct messaging? The Firebase and Antigravity forums, seemingly on their own separate Discourse instances, each allow it. Why not here?
Especially odd given that Discourse offers this per-user setting:

Thanks @Steve ,
Let me ask around about the logic for this rule. I will get back to you soon.

Hello @Steve ,
As promised, I asked the team about this and I learned this limitation was implemented to mitigate “the risk of spam/abuse in other user DMs”
DMs work only from Google Staff to users (and then you can reply back to the message). Limiting DMs was done urging of the legal/privacy teams to limit the potential for spam/abuse in user to user DMs.
I’ll flag the color issue for review. Thanks!
I am sorry, I wish I could give you a better answer.

This clearly isn’t a Google-wide policy, so why are we subjected to it, @andrew_b ? Is Andrew even still with Google? @Michelle ? @Miqua ?
@Steve - yes, @Andrew_B is still with Google. We have raised the inquiry to Andrew and are meeting internally for the next steps. Since this is per the advice of the legal/privacy teams there is a process that needs to be followed. We will provide updates on this thread as they become available.
