This week, my GA4-based dashboard is throwing “system errors” for me. For context, this dashboard reports on basic website performance, including scorecards for number of users/sessions/views, tables for visitor countries or origin, and line charts for visitor traffic over time vs. previous year.
The dash includes a date control so the data can be filtered by different time frames, as well as an input box allowing data to be filtered by “page path.”
The way the issue manifests is as follows:
All dashboard charts/tables/scorecards are working fine
User makes a change to the date control OR page path input box control.
Several charts throw a “system error,” with a variety of error codes, including: 6984ba60, e0454096, e3d8ea43, 85aac208… The error codes appear to change each time, and I can’t glean much from them.
Only way to resolve is to refresh the actual browser, which resets to the default date range. Issue repeats once user touches the date control again.
Note that the charts that throw the error change each time — it’s not all charts, nor is it the same few charts.
So far I’ve tried the following to resolve. None fix the issue.
Removing and re-adding the controls
“Refresh fields” in the data source view for GA4
“Refresh data” under the “View” dropdown
Making a copy of the dashboard
Making a copy and splitting the charts into separate pages
Some additional insights, here are 2 tables on top of each other, the one shows data the other renders the system error. No issues with Google Ads / Search Console etc, just Google Analytics.
So, there are quota limitation on GA4 connector. Meaning that if you start playing with controls/dates, it pulls more data and eventually you reach your max quota, throwing errors everywhere:
Solution: instead of using direct GA4 native connector, either use a third-party connector (paid solution) or make an Extract data (free solution), replace it as a data source in your dataviz, and you should be ok:
I have had quota errors in the past, this is a system error. We do use Supermetrics for other data sources, or clients who pay for management, we have hundreds of analytics accounts though.
We have copied our report and shared it with multiple account managers each who have Google Business Emails and only view their clients to reduce the quota usage.
What I just did was loaded the page it showed the error, directly after I refreshed the page and the error was gone. @ryandurkin can you test this on your side.
Ok, well tbh I don’t know what could be wrong here. I’ve notived many issues with Looker Studio recently (changing names, loading pages, broken dataviz, …) as they must be working on the solution, maybe it’s related and hopefully temporary
The last issue that we had you were to the person that got it resolved and this is why I am sending this message to you I would appreciate it if you had a look for us.
I have tried this is both Chrome and Firebox and I have refreshed Cache etc.
The issue is intermittent, see the first image below there it has a system error in the top right, I then click on explore and the data can be found.
In the second image I refresh the page and everything is there.
Third image I have refreshed and the data is all there and the forth image I change the client and again there are lots of system errors. I then refreshed again as can be seen with the last image most of the data is on the report.
Some pages of the report show everything first time and others show individual elements.
I have looked at our Google Ads / Search Console / Youtube Analytics reports along with our Supermetrics and none of them are having issues.
I have duplicated the report and allocated it to a different email account as the owner, not sure if this should make a difference but the same thing applies. I am on a 1gb internet line.
Refresh occasionally works for me, but if one starts working again, another breaks. I almost never have a fully working dashboard anymore with GA4 data.
