Preview announcements

Preview feature releases enable you to try out new app features that are not yet fully supported. See Product launch stages.

  • No new preview features were released today.

What’s currently available in Preview?

The following tables summarize the preview features that are currently available.

Item Description
Feature AppSheet databases (Preview)

The new AppSheet database feature is now in preview release. An AppSheet database is a first-party, native data source for organizing and managing data powering AppSheet apps. An AppSheet database provides an easy and efficient way to build data models for any AppSheet app without needing to use an external data source solution such as cloud-based spreadsheets or databases.

For more information, see:

- Community announcement
- AppSheet databases
Enhancement Navigation improvements in AppSheet app editor (Preview)

The app editor includes navigation improvements, currently in preview, to facilitate the configuration of specific features. For example, the new Settings section in the left navigation gathers together all app-wide settings and makes it more intuitive for all app creators to find these types of settings.

For more information, see:

- Community announcement
- Summary of navigation improvements in the app editor (Preview).
Feature AppSheet apps for desktop users (Preview)

The new desktop design, currently in preview, is optimized for desktop browsers, presenting a more complete view of information with a consistent organization and structure. The new desktop design lets users navigate their apps more easily and access information in context, and provides an efficient way to edit existing records without losing context. The legacy desktop design, enabled by default, provides an experience similar to the mobile and tablet device.

For more information, see:

- Community article
- Optimize the user experience using the new desktop design (Preview)

The following features require opt-in to the AppSheet preview program. The AppSheet Preview program lets app creators try out new app features that are not yet fully supported.

I`m not seeing this changed on my account, but for me it looks like the same action as we have now? Or it does different things?

I saw this on my account, which is good correction, thank you. @Arthur_Rallu

“Open in tab” is the existing behavior; there’s no difference between opening with that link and picking it from the app gallery.

The desktop emulator behaves like the current emulator, just in a new tab.

@Anonymous thank you, but i m still unsure what the different is going to be , but once the new action is seen in our account, it should tell.

@Koichi_Tsuji I think the new preview uses websocket to open a connection to the new desktop emulator, so it basically shows any changes you do in the editor.

It actually is an external emulator, which partly delivers what I asked here:

External Emulator window - Google Cloud Community

Thank you @SkrOYC , for additional clarity.

I m looking forward to testing this new ones.

Cheers.

Also make sure to activate the Desktop Mode Preview for the app you want to test this new Desktop Emulator.

To be honest it doesn’t make too much sense that we need to check that Preview checkbox to just test the new Desktop Mode. We should be able to test without allowing our users to use it since it’s obviously on it works to become a proper stable release.

Maybe that’s why you don’t see it yet

Heads up, we noticed a problem in the desktop emulator code that could break the editor save button under certain conditions, so we had to turn it off. We should have a fix out Monday.

@lizlynch

Is this an intended behavior or possible bug? I changed the mail address for “preview app as” option and hit “desktop mode” option to preview the app with this app users. However, the preview with full screen is displaying app with the app owners id, which is making this display option less useful. Hope this is a bug, not intended.

@Koichi_Tsuji - Passing this on to the dev team! Stay tuned. Thank you!

I was wondering the same thing! A large benefit of the “Preview” screen is the ability to simulate different users, especially when you are building an app with complex user permissions.

Staying tuned for the update!

We have plans to support Preview As in the desktop emulator, but we decided to ship something simpler for now. I’ll let the team know you want this.

I think that, when using the Desktop Emulator, the iframe for the mobile/tablet emulator should be hidden, but preview as and others should remain available somewhere

@lizlynch Thanks for passing onto Devs, yes, I always stay tuned. Hope good one will come on this.
