Linking data across three tables and pulling in to a master list's detail view by item

Hello, we are new to AppSheet but have made great strides thanks to all the wonderful community content but just cannot figure out how to do something.

We have three data tables (coming from three different Google Sheets - and they need to exist as three different sheets): a master list of people (keyed on their email address), a list of transactions from this year (with a ref email field), and a list of transactions from last year (also with a ref email address field).

Our desired workflow is to start from the master list of people view, click on a person to open their detail view, and on that detail view either list their transactions from this year and last year (separately) or have a navigation button to go to a list of just that person’s transactions from each year. I just cannot figure out how to include the different transactions on the detail view - I have tried from the detail view adding a column for “Related 2024 transactions” and “Related 2023 transactions” but nothing populates (sometimes I get the field title for this year with no data and other times I don’t even get the field title - and I never get the 2023 transactions title or data). Those Related entries have an app formula of ref_rows(“

”, “email address”) - and I do have ‘show’ checked but just do not see any data.

If I open the app formula and click to test the expression result is blank so I think I have the wrong expression (ref_rows was auto-populated) but I’m not sure what I actually want here . . .

I can create separate views of the transactions and see all the data, search by email and see the details for the transactions, etc. - I am just trying to link everything so you start with the person and then can see the transactions.

The intent is to grow our data by adding new tables (from separate Sheets) each year - thus there will always be one year of “live” data that is continuously populating plus historic data from multiple years. If it matters/helps, this is all read-only to look things up; the actual data entry takes place elsewhere and flows into the Sheet.

Figured it out! The issue was the email field in the master list of people was not the index - when I made it the index the ref_rows started working!
