Knotrik: Search Across Apps, Compare Versions & Analyze AppSheet Ecosystems

Ever had to add, delete, rename a column, or change a data type and wondered which apps would break?

After years of building and maintaining AppSheet solutions, that’s the kind of question that kept eating my time.

Building an app is only part of the challenge.

Understanding, maintaining, documenting, and evolving an entire AppSheet ecosystem becomes increasingly difficult over time.

Questions start to appear:

  • Which apps use this table?
  • What breaks if I change this column?
  • Where is this action, bot, slice, or expression actually used?
  • What changed since the last time I worked on this project?
  • How is everything connected?
  • What does this app actually do without spending hours clicking through it?

At some point, the challenge stops being building apps and starts becoming understanding the ecosystem.

When you’re managing multiple apps, clients, automations, and developers, keeping the big picture in your head gets harder every month.

That’s what led us to build Knotrik.

We’ve been working on it for a while, and it’s reached the point where we rely on it every day ourselves.

A few things it can do:

:vs_button: Version comparison

Compare app versions side-by-side to quickly spot what changed between revisions.

:magnifying_glass_tilted_left: Search across your entire ecosystem

Find tables, columns, actions, bots, slices, expressions, or even arbitrary text across all your apps in seconds.

Generate database structure summaries, impact analysis, portfolio-level reports, and custom reports using your own prompts.

:open_file_folder: Ecosystem organization

Group applications into collections that match your clients, departments, projects, or any structure that makes sense for your team.

:robot: AI-powered ecosystem assistance

Ask questions from Claude or ChatGPT through Knotrik’s MCP, such as:

  • Where is this expression used?
  • What depends on this table?
  • What changed since last month?
  • Walk me through this app or ecosystem.

I’ve attached a short demo video and a couple of examples of the dependency graph and version comparison features.

We’re opening free access to a small group of AppSheet users who would like to help shape where it goes next.

Whether you’re managing a few apps or an entire ecosystem, we’d love to hear how you’re currently keeping track of everything and what challenges you’ve run into along the way.

If this sounds interesting, there’s a short form at knotrik.com, and we’d be happy to schedule a walkthrough.

Great work putting Knotrik together. As my appsheet environments grow, managing the downstream impact of changes has been becoming tough. Being able to get tangible information on the fly is going to save a ton of time troubleshooting.

On top of that, the depth of the Claude MCP integration is seriously impressive. The cross-ecosystem search combined with that level of AI assistance makes this a must-have tool.

Keep pushing the boundaries with this project. As a specialized AppSheet developer managing rented applications for corporate clients, having a utility like this is absolutely priceless.

@Denzil_Snyman

Thank you, Denzil. That means a lot.

The downstream impact of changes across multiple apps is exactly the problem that pushed us to build Knotrik in the first place, so it’s great to hear that it resonates with someone managing rented applications at scale. Although features like app comparison and the MCP have also proven to be useful for us, even on single-app implementations.

It’s very much a team effort, and we’re improving it constantly based on exactly the kind of real-world use you’re putting it through. If you ever come across something that would make it more useful for your corporate work, just let me know.

Thank you, Shourya! I really appreciate the encouragement and support.

It’s exciting to finally start sharing Knotrik with the community and seeing how experienced AppSheet developers derive value from it to build even more robust ecosystems.

Thanks again for taking the time to comment.

PD, possible to move this post to Tips and Tricks section? I wasn’t able to post there.

I had a massive workload with a ton of changes to push—adding and removing tables/columns, changing data types, and setting up a web of complex formulas, Valid_If, Show_If, and Required_If logic. Normally, trying to keep track of all that manually is a chaotic nightmare.

But using Knotrik to compare the scanned versions gave me deep, instant insight into exactly what changed. I was able to verify everything one by one with total ease before deploying to Stable.

For the first time after a massive update sprint, I felt completely in control and actually slept like a baby on Sunday night. You’ve built an incredible tool here. Keep up the awesome work!

Awesome news, Denzil! I’m happy to hear everything went well with that big round of changes you had planned.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We really value it and continue fine-tuning Knotrik based on real-world experiences like yours.

I appreciate the kind words and I’m glad Knotrik helped bring some peace of mind before deployment.

Wow! Obviously I can’t make product endorsements or speak to any other product’s security, etc., but this looks really neat! Nice job and hopefully lots of people get value out of it.

Thank you, Hugh, I appreciate that.

And thank you for the disclaimer as well, completely understood.

It’s still early, but we’re excited to see how the community puts it to use and what we can learn from the feedback. We’re already getting some interesting insights and use cases that we hadn’t initially considered.

Thanks again for taking the time to check it out.

Hey Cam, thank you for taking the time to check it out and for the kind words.

It honestly means a lot coming from someone who’s contributed so much to the AppSheet ecosystem. The team and I are excited to keep pushing Knotrik forward and see how people put it to use in real-world environments.

I’ve been following the great work QREW has been doing for quite some time as well, so I really appreciate the mention and the support.

Looking forward to sharing more as we continue building.
