iOS image capture causing white screen after taking photo

We’re experiencing a recurring issue on our AppSheet app when capturing photos on iOS devices, especially on newer iPad Pro models running the latest iOS version.

When taking a photo inside a form, the camera opens normally, but after tapping Use Photo the screen occasionally turns completely white. The app doesn’t fully close, but it never recovers, so we have to force-quit and reopen it.

Key details from our testing:

  • Each form contains a maximum of four image fields.

  • The issue only occurs when the device is online.

  • When working offline, the problem does not appear at all.

  • The behaviour is most common on high-resolution devices such as the iPad Pro.

  • Sometimes the captured photo is saved after reopening the app, sometimes it isn’t.

Troubleshooting already attempted:

  • Adjusting AppSheet image upload size.

  • Switching the iPad’s camera settings to “Most Compatible” instead of “High Efficiency”.

None of these produces a consistent fix.

At this point we’re just trying to determine whether anyone else is experiencing similar behaviour on iOS, particularly on recent iPad Pro devices. Any insight, confirmed workarounds, or configuration recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

You definitely MUST use the “Most Compatible”. Last I knew, AppSheet does not support HEIC images because Google Chrome (and likely other browsers) do not yet support them.

“Consistent”? Are you able to sometimes capture the image? You also said “especially on newer iPad Pro models”. Does it work on iPhones and other iPads?

Can you take additional photos normally OUTSIDE of the app?

The device you are having trouble with, does it have enough available storage??

I do have an iPad Pro and an app that captures images. I’ll test on my iPad to rule out a consistent AppSheet issue.

#1 - I assume you are using AppSheet app in your device. What happens if you use your device’s default browser instead of the AppSheet app? Is the behavior the same?

#2 - What happens if you add only one image?

I tried this on my iPad Pro. It is an older model which is not capable of HEIC images so it may not be a good use case for your issue. I updated to the most recent iOS. I am not having any issues with saving images.

After a couple of tests I realized I needed to update the AppSheet app itself. I seem to always have an issue with the AppSheet app updating automatically on both my iPad and iPhone (2 different models). I had version 15.9 and the most recent is 16.8. You may want to check that the AppSheet app itself is the most up to date.
