last month I was able to preview m app in the app editor e.g. I could see how my app would look in mobile view just to the right of the editor. Now this is not possible I need to load the app via the app URL. Has the app preview been removed ?

You can close the emulator at will.
Check the right side of the editor and if there is an arrow pointing ← you can click it and it should open the emulator.
