I’ve noticed a recurring issue while using Looker Studio. When adding URLs (e.g., Google Form links) in table fields, buttons, or text boxes, the expected behavior is for the link to open in a new tab, allowing the user to retain access to the dashboard.
However, recently, all links are opening in the same tab, causing the Looker Studio report/dashboard to close and redirect to the linked URL. This disrupts the user experience, especially in client-facing dashboards where continuity is crucial.
This behavior persists across different browsers and devices and seems to be a recent change — earlier, links could open in a new tab with default behavior.
This has been an issue for some time now. I am also looking for a solution. No matter how many times I select the option for “Open link in new tab”, the dashboard keeps opening link in the same tab. This is not good at all.
Have you figured out a solution to this?
It’s weird because URLs that were previously on the dashboard/report, continue to open in a new tab. But any new ones I add will open in the current tab no matter how many times I check the open in a new tab box.
I was going to say the same thing! My internal repro is now magically working.
But then I created a second button on the same report, configured to open a new tab, and it opens in the same tab. So maybe there is some sort of delay at work here. We will continue to investigate.
So we’ve done some more testing here and the problem only seems to affect newly added links.
In fact, even refreshing the page after adding the link seems to fix the issue. Is this what you all are seeing as well? Are there examples of links that are still going to the same tab after a refresh?
Although refreshing the page didn’t work for me before, I’ll try it and get back to you. But leaving the dashboard and coming back after a while seemed to make it work.
Having the same issue. I can check the box, but it still opens in the same tab. After a refresh, I go back in and that box is unchecked. Tried it across multiple reports, and yes only happening to new links. Old ones open in a new tab.
