I’m considering the Google Cloud Digital Leader certification exam to build a foundational understanding of cloud concepts for my role and longer-term career growth and I wanted to get some perspective based on my background.
I don’t have any hands-on experience with cloud platforms including Google Cloud. My IT exposure so far has been fairly limited and mostly focused on everyday end-user tools such as documents, spreadsheets and collaboration software. Most of my work has been business-oriented, involving activities like coordinating projects, preparing reports and working alongside technical teams rather than configuring systems or implementing technical solutions myself.
I’d really appreciate any advice on things like:
How challenging the exam is for someone with this level of experience
Whether it assumes prior cloud knowledge or stays more high-level and conceptual
Which topics are most important to focus on when preparing
Any beginner-friendly study resources or strategies that worked well for you
I’m especially unsure how much technical depth is expected and want to prepare in a realistic way. Thanks in advance for any insights. looking forward to learning from the community!
IMO high-level and conceptual. You don;t have to know how to plan migration from on-prem to cloud, but you should be familiar with prons and cons each of them for example.
Hi there, you’re actually very close to the ideal audience for the Google Cloud Digital Leader cert.
The exam is not hands-on and doesn’t require configuring anything in Google Cloud. It stays high-level and business-focused, covering what cloud services are for and why organizations use them. People in business or project roles often find it approachable once the terminology clicks.
The technical depth is mostly conceptual: things like IaaS vs PaaS vs SaaS, when to use compute/storage/data/AI services, and the basics of security, cost, and business value.
For prep, the official Digital Leader learning path on Google Cloud Skills Boost is very beginner-friendly and closely aligned with the exam. Beyond that, working through practice questions in the exam style, including scenario-based questions from resources like CertBoosters can help you get comfortable with how questions are phrased and reinforce your understanding of the core concepts.
A key tip is not to over-study technical details if you’re deep into configs or commands, you’re probably going beyond what’s needed. Overall, this is a solid, confidence-building starting point given your background. Good luck, and feel free to ask more questions as you prepare!
