I am working on automatic quotation forms for my website https://lpmathiasen.dk and a customer management system.

What expertise do you have to share or what are you learning?

Right now not so much to share but when I have something I love to share it.

What would you like to get out of this Community?

I would like to get advises and when I am good enough I would like to help others in this community.

What do you do for fun?

I fly drones and take pictures of landscapes.

Hi everyone! I’ve been working with Sheets, GAS, and other Google services for a few years, and am just now getting started with AppSheet.

I’ve been motivated to do so by a project I’m working on, which includes Google Forms. Working on this project, I’ve come to realize how limited the programmability of G Forms is, and so I’m trying to use AppSheet in its place while keeping the rest of the project based in GA Script, Sheets, and Calendar.

It’s trickier than I bargained for after watching so many YouTube videos that made the learning curve look so flat. I’m about to make what will probably be the first of many questions that come up as I try this.

In what part of the world do you reside?
Philadelphia, PA, USA.

What do you work on?
Equipment? An old iMac and a Chromebook held together with duct tape :slightly_smiling_face:
Services? Mostly Google Apps Script, Sheets, Drive, Calendar, and Forms. HTML/CSS-literate but not fluent. Still mostly ignorant of other forms of JavaScript and other programming wares; don’t use Microsoft products.

What expertise do you have to share or what are you learning?
I’m here to learn AppSheet.

What would you like to get out of this Community?
Help with the stuff I don’t find obvious, like what all these error messages mean!

What do you do for fun?

Besides this? Doing work I love, helping out newbies when I have time, working at home and looking forward to traveling again? Let me think about that.

Dressing like a rock star. Yoga, biking, hiking, foraging, dancing, expanding my tastes and knowledge of music, random acts of creativity. And oh yeah, my roommates’ cats amuse me endlessly and prevent me from working too much.

Hi all!

In what part of the world do you reside?

I’m in Kelowna, BC, in Canada. We have mountains, lakes, >100 wineries, and a pleasant climate. Not a bad place to be.

What do you work on?

Not much. I’m an old fart with around 80 birthdays under my belt. I started my career as a programmer back in 1967 and accomplished two things of note: (1) I almost bankrupted Aston Martin, the car company, because they thought they were making a profit on each car but were actually losing money thanks to one tiny little error I made in one of my programs (honestly, it really was a tiny little error); and (2) I did the programming for quite a neat process control system that automated the operation of a gold mine. Other stuff too, but boring. I started my own custom application development company in 1985, sold it 13 years later, and then spent three years swanning around the Caribbean in a sailboat. Started another company with my wife and sold it ten years ago, then moved to where I am and built a retirement home overlooking the lake. I have been supporting the work of a local charity by stabilizing, massively upgrading, and supporting and enhancing an Excel workbook they used, but the time has come to move to a “real” system. Hence AppSheet.

What expertise do you have to share or what are you learning?

If you have an old circa 1968 IBM 1130 gathering dust in the basement, I could help you program it in assembler language. In time, I also hope to be able to share what I learn about AppSheet. Funnily enough, one of the trickiest issues I have had with AppSheet so far has been having to __un__learn a bunch of stuff I knew. Plus, my brain isn’t quite as sharp as it once was so I have to learn everything three times over.

What would you like to get out of this Community?

Help with issues. Which is what I would also like to be able to put back.

Wow! You are acquiring a new skill at 80 proves that age is just a number. Gives inspiration to a 61 year old like me and I am sure many more in the community.

Nice to know that you have a software career that started way back in 1967. This means you have seen all the phases of the IT industry. Right from the beginning when punched cards must have been the norm for programming to today when AI is the latest star on the horizon.

I actually had a brief career (c. 18 months) selling punched card equipment before I became a trainee programmer.

Talking of AI: I have tried using ChatGPT to answer questions about AppSheet. It instantly gives long, detailed, and impressive answers, most of which turn out to be completely incorrect! All AI is A, but not all AI is I just yet.

Have you tried GPT 4? A super precise description yields good results after a few back and forth. Though I have to usually be stern with it, when it tries to use variables in a formula :joy:

I live in Norway, my hobby is Norwegian banknotes, technology and business, and I have worked as a commercial real estate property consultant for the past 25 years. Due to the market collapse, I challenge myself to build a platform for collectors, which is my hobby. So I have learned basic AppSheet and built a collector platform for those who collect coins and notes. I’m launching it first in Norway and using the AppSheet community to learn and find good people for beta 1 of Collectium.

Here’s a bit about the concept: This company was established by me after he tried to get a good overview of his own collection. I created an Excel spreadsheet that contained all of the collector’s basic information. This was not perfect compared to traditional catalogs. It became a very extensive method with many complex formulas that caused a lot of false information in the spreadsheet. As for technological advancements, I managed to create a database from Google looker and then App Sheet and the result turned out to be excellent.

I love trying myself in technology

I’ve created several apps, and I still have questions about things I haven’t tried yet.

What do you work on?

My role is Technical Director for a 501(c)3 organization that installs water pumps in African villages. Then we add a satellite-based device to monitor pumps. The data is routed through Globalstar to Google Sheets then on to AppSheet.

What expertise do you have to share or what are you learning?

My background is mechanical engineering, hence the water pump part. I am a learner when it comes to AppSheet. However, what attracted me to AppSheet was the ease that Google has made to write minimal-code Apps. Thanks, AppSheet. You have placed a powerful tool in the hands of inexperienced people. That tool, in turn, is helping remote villagers in Africa and the organizations that support those villages. I have nothing useful to share.

What would you like to get out of this Community?

My goal in this community is to find answers to questions that might be a little bit beyond the current AppSheet help. The range of topics and depth of solutions have already been helpful. And all this is supplemented by those excellent video tutorials on YouTube by Matt from MTV. Thanks, Matt! You explain complex topics so well.

O que vocĂȘ faz para se divertir?

Aqui e Amazonas, muitas opçÔes para se divertir e conhecer os municípios e paisagens locais exuberantes. Tenho um pequeno bote, e vou por aew (Rio Negro) jogando linha (pescar) e escolhendo a praia que quero montar um pequeno acampamento e assar uma carne e peixe.
