Guidance Requested on Migrating App from Google Sheets to AppSheet Database

I’m looking for guidance on the best way to migrate my AppSheet application from Google Sheets to AppSheet Database.

The app currently uses 18 tables in Google Sheets, with the largest table containing about 12,000 rows. The app is actively used, and adoption is growing, so the number of users and the amount of data in the app will likely continue to increase, and I want performance to be as good as possible.

Because of this, I would like to move the app toward AppSheet Database, but I want to make sure I follow the recommended process from the AppSheet team before making changes.

Some of the tables are core operational tables that are referenced frequently and continue to grow. Other tables are mostly configuration or UI helper tables that change rarely.

So far, moving data from sheets to ASDB has not been very successful for me. I frequently encounter situations where the editor freezes or never completes, particularly when working with the larger tables (~12k rows). Efforts have failed when attempting to migrate tables using approaches such as:

  • the “Move to AppSheet Database” option

  • importing the table into ASDB and reconnecting it in the editor

  • regenerating the schema

Could you please advise on:

  1. Whether it makes sense to move the core operational tables to AppSheet Database while keeping the configuration tables in Google Sheets, or if you recommend a different approach.

  2. The recommended steps for migrating tables from Google Sheets to AppSheet Database for an app of this size.

  3. Any best practices or migration order you recommend to avoid breaking references, bots, or views.

Thank you very much for your help.

What makes you think ASDB would perform better?

Hello @mrgillly,

Welcome back to the Appsheet Community!

Please find this help article on how to properly Create, import, and copy databases

As @Steve correctly states, it is important to keep in mind AppSheet’s Restrictions, limits, and known issues. Please note you have different options to Manage data sources to suit your needs.

Please let us know if you have any further questions.

Steve, good question. I think after some more research, I will avoid ASDB. Thanks!
