The current AppSheet filter sidebar forces users into a tedious process of scrolling and predicting the exact location of a relevant column just to execute a targeted search. While using the browser’s Cmd+F is a temporary workaround, the native filtering UI feels significantly outdated compared to the seamless data discovery experiences provided by modern platforms. To remain competitive, AppSheet needs a more robust and integrated search interface.
The Proposed Solution
Implement an inline column selector directly within the unified search bar utilizing the following mechanics:
-
Default state: The search bar defaults to querying “All columns” for global searches.
-
Dropdown search: A dropdown attached directly to the search input allows users to quickly select a searchable column.
-
Alphabetical sorting: The columns within this dropdown must be sorted A-Z, completely eliminating the need to hunt for unorganized or visually buried column names.
-
Contextual input: Once a column is selected, the search input placeholder dynamically updates based on the data type of the selected column.
-
Quick search operators: Expose operators (eg: and, or, contains, equals, not equals, greather than, less than, is blank, is not blank, starts with, ends with, etc.) to allow for highly precise queries right from the search bar, bypassing the need for complex pre-built slices.
Why This Matters
I realize the community has submitted a mountain of feature requests, and it is easy for this to snowball into larger architectural asks, which I and others have advocated for in the past. However, modernizing the search and filter UI is a foundational necessity. It is a straightforward but essential quality-of-life improvement that would immediately elevate the platform’s everyday usability.
For context on how this fits into the broader UX improvements necessary for the platform, here are a few of my related discussions from earlier this year:
Would like to know how is the rest of the community handling filter fatigue on views with massive column lists?
