We’re using a backup vault for our Cloud SQL backups. As location we’re using “europe-west6”
One of our requirements is that backups are physically stored in two different datacenters within that location. Is this the case when using Backup & DR vaults for SQL backups?
When you use Google Cloud’s Backup & DR vaults, your backups aren’t stored in just one place. Instead, they are copied across at least two different zones inside the same region.
For example, if your vault is in europe-west6 (Zürich), your Cloud SQL backups are spread across multiple zones there. So, if one zone goes down, your backups are still safe in another.
By default, Cloud SQL also makes copies of backups across zones, but using Backup & DR vaults gives you extra protection, like stronger security and isolation.
Keep in mind that Google doesn’t clearly say if the copies are in completely different physical buildings. If you need to be 100% sure for compliance, it’s best to confirm directly with Google. I suggest contacting Google Cloud Support for deeper insight as they have better visibility into the underlying system and can assist you with specific issues.
