Correct.
It’s possible, using Automation, but it’s cumbersome.
AppSheet is really not well suited for uses that need (near-)real-time updates

As @Steve rightly guided, I also believe there is no user-friendly way to alert the app user of data changes and that she/he needs to sync.
You could possibly think of in device notifications or sending an email to the users.
@Lynn may want to add his thoughts.
