App Background Image

@Adam-google @lizlynch

Is there any other documentation that explains Background Image Behaviour.

Where does it display, which Views, etc.?

I have noticed on mobile it shows behind Deck View however not on the Browser, which led me to search for any documentation on how this displays. It seems inconsistent between Desktop and Mobile. There are other posts in past about its behaviour on desktop that seem to have been ignored on desktop design.

Can you perhaps check documentation or guide me if I’m missing it, then also check inconsistencies between desktop and mobile when using this feature.

Hello @Denzil_Snyman,

I found in another post that “background images are not shown everywhere. Check on a detail view with not so much fields”

I hope this helps!

I am very aware of where it is displaying and where it is not, the post was made to clarify discrepancies between desktop and mobile version that need to be sorted by your team as it is not in preview, it is an official feature from the start days of appsheet.

Also I beleive this should be documented properly for users to understand where feature applies and where it does not instead of relying on user posts in the forum.

I checked again on Christian Schalk’s Appsheet Video building UIs in Appsheet @66:15, it says we can put a backround image without any limitations mentioned or restrictions.

On Appsheet documentation link below it says “Specify the image to be used for the background for all pages in the app.”

“All pages”

Style: The Essentials - AppSheet Help Style: The Essentials - AppSheet Help

Please could team rectify this feature ASAP to work as Advertised on mobile and desktop.

Hello @Denzil_Snyman,

I built an app just to test functionality and I noticed that the background image is actually behind the data fields being displayed. Let me know if this helps please.

Happy holidays!

Hi Jose,

Thank you for trying.

Yes I can achieve that. I am asking for the team to document it’s use properly in the paperwork and to fix the inability to see it on all pages as it states in documents. It doesn’t show on desktop views behind Deck views, card views, etc..

I used the summarize feature help you keep up with what was posted.

Topic summary

Denzil_Snyman raises an issue regarding the inconsistent behavior of the App Background Image feature between mobile and desktop versions. The user notes that the background image displays behind Deck Views on mobile but not in a browser. This inconsistency, combined with a lack of clear documentation, is causing confusion.

Denzil_Snyman points out that official AppSheet documentation and tutorial videos suggest the background should apply to “all pages,” which is not the current behavior on desktop for views like Deck and Card views. While Jose_Arteaga attempts to help by referencing other community posts and running a test, Denzil_Snyman clarifies that the main request is for the AppSheet team to either fix the feature to work as advertised or to update the official documentation to accurately describe its limitations.

Note that the handling of the background image changed several years back. As I recall, the views used to be semi-transparent, so the background image was still visible. It then changed abruptly. I want to say it coincided with the addition of card views. AppSheet (then Google? I don’t recall) had hired a new developer focused on the UI. @Suvrutt_Gurjar, do you remember this?

Hi Steve ,

You are correct. Yes. I too believe, the full background image used to show in the background with “overlay” text from the view.

It did change a few years ago. I believe you are correct that it changed sometime during introduction of card views.
