The Apigee team is moving full steam ahead, expanding our AI Gateway footprint right on top of our core API Management platform. :money_bag: AI Tokenomics

AI Tokenomics is the economic framework and FinOps discipline of tracking, managing, and optimizing token consumption, inference costs, and unit economics across enterprise LLMs and autonomous agents. Because LLM interactions are probabilistic and agentic workflows compound token volume rapidly, unmanaged usage risks severe budget overruns and “Shadow AI”.

Apigee acts as an AI Gateway and Control Plane, bridging raw model consumption and financial governance:

  • Token-Aware Rate Limiting: Uses policies like PromptTokenLimit and LLMTokenQuota to throttle prompt spikes and enforce hard token budgets across teams or API products. :vertical_traffic_light:

  • Cost Optimization: Implements semantic caching to eliminate redundant LLM calls and dynamic model routing to send queries to the most cost-effective model tier. :high_voltage:

  • Attribution & FinOps: Tracks granular token usage per agent or app, enabling internal chargebacks and external monetization of AI products. :bar_chart:

:three_o_clock: Apigee Maintenance Windows

Apigee X release 1-17-0-apigee-10 and 1-18-0-apigee-2 have been leveraging our maintenance windows feature. In case you wonder what this is:

Apigee offers you the ability to configure maintenance to occur at the most opportune time for your application. You can do this by configuring maintenance windows. Set the day of the week, and the order of updates for your instances (if you have multiple).

Apigee does not roll out every runtime version to instances with maintenance windows. Updates are typically bundled and rolled out only when a release has been determined to be highly stable across the fleet. Consequently, your instances might skip several version numbers between updates. New maintenance window rollouts are announced in the Apigee Release Notes. :clipboard:

:package: Release Summary

  • Model Armor on Function Calling: Apigee 1-18-0-apigee-2 introduces the option to apply Model Armor on function calling (using tools). You can apply it to either the function call or the function response. :shield:

  • Hybrid Runtime Rollout Strategies: Apigee Hybrid versions 1.14.7, 1.15.7, and 1.16.8 feature options to configure rollout strategies when updating the runtime: rolling update, scale-down-first, or one-shot cutover. Learn more :up_right_arrow:︎ :counterclockwise_arrows_button:

  • gcloud MCP Configuration: The gcloud command now enables you to configure and deploy API Hub Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers directly to an attached Apigee runtime. :hammer_and_wrench:

  • PDU Limit Visualization: The Apigee UI has improved PDU limit visualization, adding key metrics like “Deployments per instance” and “per-org basepaths” directly to the instance details page. :eye:
